This past school year the McKinley student body, led by our 3 – 5 grade student council members, in collaboration with various school committees, created a $1,000 student led action project/grant. This grant gave our students an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others, promoting equity and inclusion in our community.
Our student council members developed ideas, presented to classes, and then ALL students on campus voted on how we would spend this grant money and take action as students!
After the student body voted, a beach clean up and helping the homeless were the top two choices. Earlier this year, we hosted two successful beach clean up days at Fiesta Island. And on Tuesday, July 26, we donated two brand new bunk beds, four mattresses, and kitchen supplies to Humble Design, an incredible local organization that strives to change lives and communities. Humble Design, a San Diego non-profit organization, designs and fully furnishes home interiors for individuals, families and veterans emerging from homelessness.
If you have items to donate, please email their warehouse manager (ops.san@humbledesign.org) with a list of items you would like to donate along with photos of any furniture items. Donations are by appointment only.
