Dear Fellow McKinley Community Members,

A few months ago, some of us in our school community came together to share our concerns regarding the many injustices our Black, Brown, and other marginalized communities were experiencing. After several conversations we agreed we wanted to establish a Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (J.E.D.I.) at McKinley Elementary. Our first step was to share our conversations with Principal Deb Ganderton. Deb and her staff were supportive of our proposal and we shared it more widely during the November 2021 meeting of the School Site Council/Site Governance Team (SSC/SGT). The members of the SSC/SGT authorized our proposal and on January 26, 2021, we gathered a diverse group of McKinley Parents for the very first meeting of the J.E.D.I. Steering Committee. At this initial meeting, we presented some background information, and we had meaningful exchanges about the development of the Committee’s mission and potential steps to move forward.

Last week, a McKinley parent reached out asking if our School or District would be putting out a statement in support of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community due to the increase in anti-Asian violence and hate incidents. A couple of days later we found out that the Board of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) had a resolution in Support of the AAPI Community condemning the escalated violence and hate crimes directed against the AAPI community since the start of the pandemic on the agenda for Tuesday, March 23, 2021. As a result, the McKinley J.E.D.I. Committee collectively drafted a statement of support that we all agreed on and we promptly sent it to the Board of the SDUSD. Geysil Arroyo, a McKinley parent and a member of the J.E.D.I. Committee, had the opportunity to read the statement during the SDUSD Board meeting earlier this week. You can read our statement of support here.

Most recently, Ms. Hooper, one of our 5th grade teachers, has become a member of the J.E.D.I. Steering Committee. We feel fortunate to count with her support and look forward to having more McKinley community members join us, including parents, teachers, and other staff members. We are scheduling a school wide J.E.D.I. Committee Zoom meeting for May 12, 2021 at 6:00 PM. Our plan is to share some background information, share the Committee’s mission statement, and hear from you! Please consider joining us. We believe that Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion are important to the McKinley Community. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Wendy Kim, our Committee Leader at
