Screen Shot 2018-04-04 at 11.26.48 AMWe had an unanticipated lockdown this morning and I wanted to provide a quick update.

We were notified that a backpack was left on Palm Avenue and notified our SDUSD Police Department and asked that they investigate.

Upon arrival, they asked that we err on the side of caution and clear the blacktop. This was one minute prior to class dismissal to recess. We sounded the Lockdown alarm, and students returned or remained in class.

The police quickly determined backpack belonged to a student and contained some paper and pencils. We were given the “all clear” relatively quickly and resumed our school day.

As anticipated, students had a lot of questions. At the conclusion of recess, we gathered all the children together on the blacktop and I had an opportunity to address what had happened.

They asked if the Lockdown was “real,” and I explained the situation. I closed our conversation with a message we’ve been using for similar safety-related issues – “We’re not scared, because we’re prepared.”

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
