Dear McKinley Families,
As you are well aware, there have been some delays opening our recently constructed joint-use field, built as part of San Diego Unified’s Play All Day Initiative with the City of San Diego. The district’s priority in the Play All Day Initiative is to provide a high quality, safe, and long lasting field that McKinley students, families, and neighbors can use for years to come.
Unfortunately, the quality of the construction did not meet the district’s and city’s standards. These standards were developed to ensure a durable and safe playfield. The district has notified the contractor and their surety/insurance provider of the remaining issues that need to be resolved. District staff have been attempting to secure a commitment from the contractor for immediate repairs and will be meeting with the city and contractor again this week to try to secure an agreement. The district will monitor the contractor’s progress in resolving the remaining issues. Once the field is repaired, inspected and has been cleared by the city and district, we will open the field for use by the McKinley community.
I know many of you have been incredibly excited to have this field on our campus. I am as well, and you all have been waiting patiently for the project to be completed. I truly understand your growing frustrations, but I assure you we are doing all we can to open the field to our students as quickly as possible, and we ask for your continued patience.
Your Principal,
Deb Ganderton
