Hello Parents and Families!!

As you may know, we have been launching a new music program on campus called “McKinley Musicians.” I’m honored to be the music teacher for TK-4th Grade and want to share a little about myself and the music program.

My name rhymes with “after all.” I am Mrs. Zavoral! For nearly 20 years, I’ve enjoyed teaching children in California, Minnesota, Utah, and Thailand. My experience includes teaching in public and private schools in various roles–5th Grade Teacher, Preschool Teacher, TK-8th Grade Music Specialist, Early-Childhood Music Instructor, and Private Voice and Piano Teacher. I earned a BA in Elementary Music Education from BYU, where my instrument was voice. In addition to singing, I love to play the piano, ukulele, and djembe drum. Another favorite is performing in community musicals and directing children’s plays and choirs.

When I’m not teaching, you can find me at the beach with my two sons and husband. This is our family’s third school-year attending McKinley Elem. My children are currently in 3rd and 4th Grade!

“McKinley Musicians” is a custom-designed program to benefit students in TK-4th Grade. Students attend music class during school hours as part of the wheel rotation with their other specialty classes. The curriculum focuses on joyful learning that supports the state music standards and the IB curriculum.

In class, students actively participate in singing, movement, and playing percussive instruments. They also explore musical concepts through multi-sensory games and activities. Along the way, students learn music literacy skills that will benefit them as they advance to 5th Grade and Middle School.

The 5th Grade students receive music class with Ms. Robin Dye, who is contracted through the San Diego Unified School District to teach Grades 5-12 the VAPA curriculum (Visual and Performing Arts).

The McKinley music program for TK-4th Grade is funded by the PTC through fundraisers like Jog-a-thon, SoNo Fest and the Spring Gala. Thank you to all who help contribute! Also, thank you to the board members of the McKinley PTC Foundation and to Ms. Ganderton for their behind-the-scenes work to bring music instruction to all students at our school.

I look forward to a great year with the children. Stay tuned for regular updates from the music room!

Joyfully,
