We are starting a Cesar Chavez Service Club at McKinley! Below are some details about the club, which will be meeting once a week on Wednesday afternoons, from 3pm – 4pm. The first meeting will be on Wednesday April 25th.

As we get started, the club will be open to 2nd and 3rd grade students. Depending on interest, we may be able to expand to other grades in the future. Jesse Carrillo and Scott Ghahary will be our faculty advisors, and the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs will have a club coordinator facilitate the meetings.

The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs (www.chavezclubs.org) provide leadership development programs in schools across San Diego County, building confidence, competence and a sense of community within young people. Club members, called “Chavistas,” meet weekly at their school and plan and carry out service projects to benefit the communities where they live. Through teaching the ten values Cesar Chavez embodied, the Clubs work to inspire students to believe in themselves and to learn through the Club experiences that they can make a lasting difference in our world. Each club votes on service projects they would like to work on, and projects have ranged from clean ups and tree planting, to helping organize relief efforts for victims of earthquakes in Mexico.

The clubs provide leadership and service opportunities to students guided by Club Coordinators. Educators embrace the Clubs’ work because of its positive effect on students’ attitudes and behavior. Many go on to be leaders in class, at work, and in the community.

Character Builders and PrimeTime leaders have been notified of the club start date and the club will coordinate with those programs. The club will be considered a parallel program for Prime Time purposes.

If your 2nd or 3rd grader is interested in participating, or if you have questions, please email us at mckinleychavezclub@gmail.com.
