Mingei International Museum: Family Sunday Sugar Skull Piñatas

Family Sunday is a monthly free art workshop for the whole family. Explore the Museum in new ways by going on an art treasure hunt or signing up for an art-making workshop.

For this Family Sunday, exhibiting artist Diana Benavidez will teach you how to work with tissue paper, cardboard, glue, and tape to construct piñatas in the form of a sugar skull to honor Dia de Los Muertos.

More About Diana
Diana Benavidez is a Binational artist from the San Diego/Tijuana border region. Her art practice explores piñata-making as a method of expression and storytelling. Diana builds piñatas that reflect upon her experiences growing up as a woman in a border town. Her work introduces materials not commonly found in traditional piñatas, such as media, gadgets, and technology. Diana received a BA in Visual Arts from UC San Diego. Her art has been exhibited in Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, and the U.S. Benavidez will have piñatas on display in the Museum’s exhibition PIÑATAS: THE HIGH ART OF CELEBRATION, opening October 28.

Register in advance or in person on Sunday for art-making workshops. Space is limited.
